When someone learns English as a second language, we are encouraged to say what we mean, and mean things that we do say. However, advanced and fluent speakers know this is not always applicable. Speaking naturally often requires us to put concepts together that are opposites of each other, e.g. a “passive aggressive” encounter.
In this article, we explore some of the quirky expressions that have found their place in everyday use. These expressions may be simply be a contradiction in terms, or exaggerations, or other semi-deliberate mistakes that make the text more interesting when used correctly.
Most of these fall under the category of oxymorons, which is a term for words or phrases that contradict itself.
